What is included in the price?
This is the first thing to check with any provider, because two tests at the same price can include very different things. At Boost & Glow, every blood draw is a venous draw (the same method used in GP surgeries and hospitals, not a finger-prick kit), carried out by our clinician Lucy at your home or at our Epping clinic. Home visits are available across Essex, Hertfordshire, and North and East London.
On the Well Man test, for example, we arrange a time and come to you to take the sample, the laboratory analyses it, and a clinician talks you through your results. That conversation is included in the price. Each product page sets out exactly what its price covers.
Why private blood test prices vary so much
- Number of biomarkers. A kidney check measures a handful of markers. A comprehensive panel can measure 78. More markers means a higher price, but a lower cost per marker.
- Who takes the sample, and how. A venous draw by a trained clinician costs more than a finger-prick kit posted to your door, and gives a larger sample.
- Whether someone explains your results. BlueCrest lists consultation fees as one of the main cost drivers. A result you can't interpret is only a number on a page.
- The laboratory. Different laboratories set their own prices.
- Speed. Urgent results can carry a surcharge.
- Location. Prices differ between regions and between clinic and home visits.
Is one big test cheaper than several small ones?
Usually, yes. If you bought five separate single-system tests from our list (kidney, liver, cholesterol, thyroid and testosterone), the total would be £630.95. The Well Man test covers all of those areas, plus prostate, blood count, iron, inflammation and blood sugar markers, for £325.
The single tests do go deeper in places. Our standalone thyroid test, for instance, includes T3 and thyroid antibodies, which the Well Man test does not. So if you already know which system worries you, a targeted test can be the better choice. If you don't know where to start, a broader panel is usually better value.
What the NHS covers (and when private makes sense)
The NHS does not charge for blood tests that your GP orders because of your symptoms or medical history. In England, adults aged 40 to 74 without certain existing conditions can also have a free NHS Health Check every five years, which includes a cholesterol check.
People choose a private test for a few reasons: speed, because there is no waiting for an appointment; breadth, because markers such as ferritin, vitamin D or a full hormone profile are often only tested when there is a clinical reason; convenience, because we can come to you; and because you can book without a referral. A private test does not replace care from your GP. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice.
How to choose the right test for your budget
- Tired all the time, no clear reason: the Vitamin & Nutrient test (£198), or the Well Man or Well Woman test for a broader picture.
- Heart health or family history: the Cholesterol test (£123.99), or the Advanced Cholesterol test (£230.99) for a deeper cardiovascular picture.
- Thyroid concerns: the full Thyroid profile (£124.99).
- Testosterone or low drive: the Testosterone test (£136.99), or the Well Man test, which includes testosterone, SHBG and prostate markers.
- Perimenopause or menopause symptoms: the Female Hormone Profile (£146.99).
- A full baseline for everything: the Ultimate Wellness Panel (£589.99).
Private blood test cost: your questions answered
How much does a private blood test cost in the UK?
Typically £50 to £150 for a single-system test, £80 to £250 for hormone tests, and £200 to £800 for a comprehensive health check. Our own range at Boost & Glow is £120.99 to £589.99.
What is the cheapest private blood test?
Single-marker and finger-prick tests can cost less elsewhere, but they cover less and may be less precise than a venous sample. Our lowest-priced test is the Kidney Function Blood Test at £120.99.
Do I need a GP referral for a private blood test?
No. You can book a private blood test directly without a referral.
Can I have a private blood test at home in Essex or London?
Yes. We offer home visits across Essex, Hertfordshire, and North and East London, or you can come to our clinic in Epping.
Is a private blood test worth the money?
It depends on what you want to know. If you have symptoms that haven't been explained, want a baseline before symptoms appear, or want results without waiting, many people find it worthwhile. If you only need a routine check, the NHS Health Check may be enough.
Will private health insurance pay for it?
Policies vary. Many cover diagnostic tests only when a doctor refers you for a symptom, so check with your insurer before booking.
