Blood drawn at your home or workplace · Analysed by Randox · Results in about 72 hours · Explained by Lucy, our lead clinician

The Liver Function Blood Test measures eight markers: ALT, AST, Gamma GT, bilirubin, LDH, albumin, globulin and total protein. It shows how your liver is coping with alcohol, medication, diet and everyday demands.

Liver problems often cause no obvious symptoms early on, so a blood test is a practical way to check.

What the Liver Function Blood Test measures

Biomarker What it shows
ALT (alanine aminotransferase) A liver enzyme that rises when liver cells are stressed or damaged
AST (aspartate aminotransferase) An enzyme found in the liver and also in muscle and heart
Gamma GT An enzyme that responds to alcohol, fatty liver and some medicines
Bilirubin (total) A waste product from red blood cell breakdown, processed by the liver
LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) A broader marker of tissue damage, including the liver
Albumin The main protein made by the liver
Globulin A group of proteins, some made by the liver and some by the immune system
Total protein Albumin and globulin combined

Frequently asked questions

How long do results take?

Results are usually available within 72 hours.

Can this test show the effect of alcohol on my liver?

Markers such as Gamma GT and ALT can rise with alcohol intake. A raised result has other possible causes, so it needs to be read alongside your history.

Does it include ALP?

No. ALP is included in our Bone Health Blood Test and our Sober Sanctuary Blood Test.

Do I need to prepare?

We will tell you how to prepare when you book, for example whether to avoid alcohol beforehand.

Good to know

This test measures levels in your blood and does not diagnose a condition. It does not replace care from your GP, and if you feel unwell you should seek medical advice. See our Privacy Policy for how we handle your health information.
