What is folate?

Folate contributes to normal blood formation, normal cell division, normal immune function, normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Folate also contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.

Who should check first

We recommend a blood test first. Tell our clinician about pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, medication (some medicines such as methotrexate or anti-epileptics interact with folate) and any medical condition. Low B12 should be ruled out before folate is used, so a blood test is sensible.

Possible side effects

Mild soreness, redness or bruising at the injection site. Rarely, allergic reactions.
