Iron and ferritin

Many athletes — particularly female athletes and endurance athletes — train with chronically low ferritin without ever knowing it. Vitamin D
Vitamin D receptors are present in muscle tissue, and vitamin D plays a direct role in muscle function, strength, and power output. Testosterone and sex hormones
Testosterone is the primary anabolic hormone driving muscle protein synthesis, strength adaptation, and recovery from training. Low testosterone — increasingly common in both men and women and often driven by overtraining, chronic stress, or nutritional deficiencies — significantly impairs the ability to build muscle and recover between sessions. Cortisol
Cortisol is your primary stress hormone — and training is a physical stressor. Chronically elevated cortisol, driven by overtraining, poor recovery, or life stress alongside a heavy training load, impairs muscle protein synthesis, promotes muscle breakdown, disrupts sleep, and suppresses immune function. Identifying elevated cortisol allows you to modify training load and recovery strategies before overtraining syndrome develops.
Full blood count
A full blood count looks at red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit — giving a comprehensive picture of oxygen-carrying capacity and immune status. Anaemia in any form directly impairs endurance performance and recovery. Elevated white cell counts can indicate infection or overtraining-related immune suppression.
B12 and folate
B12 and folate are essential for red blood cell production, neurological function, and the conversion of food into energy. Deficiencies impair energy metabolism, reaction times, and cognitive function during training — all of which affect performance even when physical capacity is intact.
Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions including muscle contraction and relaxation, energy production, and protein synthesis. Athletes deplete magnesium through sweat at a significantly higher rate than sedentary individuals, and deficiency is extremely common in people who train regularly. Low magnesium causes muscle cramps, impairs sleep quality, reduces power output, and slows recovery.
Inflammatory markers — CRP and homocysteine
Chronic low-grade inflammation — driven by overtraining, poor sleep, or dietary factors — impairs recovery, increases injury risk, and reduces the adaptive response to training. CRP and homocysteine give a clear picture of systemic inflammation levels and allow targeted dietary and supplementation interventions to bring them down.
Thyroid function
Thyroid hormones regulate metabolic rate — the speed at which your body produces and uses energy. Subclinical hypothyroidism, where thyroid function is impaired but not flagged by standard NHS testing, causes fatigue, reduced power output, difficulty losing body fat, and impaired recovery. A full thyroid panel catches this where a standard TSH test alone may miss it.
