My Frustration with the NHS

Samuel Dobinson sharing his NHS experience and the journey that led to founding Boost & Glow wellness company
I’ve been on a frustrating journey with the NHS over the past several weeks. What started as a small issue—an abscess just under my shoulder blade—has evolved into a long and painful saga that has tested my patience and faith in this healthcare system.

The Beginning of the Journey

It all began about 7 weeks ago when I noticed the swelling. Initially, I thought it might resolve itself, but as the discomfort intensified, I knew I needed help.

After reaching out to the NHS 111 service, I was advised to go to A&E due to the risk of sepsis. This turned into a series of frustrating encounters, culminating with a consultation with a surgeon.

The Protocol That Amused Me

During my appointment, the surgeon informed me that the protocol was to take seven days of antibiotics, wait for a head to form on the abscess, and to push all the pus out myself. This totally amused me! Not only can I not see the abscess because it's located on my back, but I also can't reach it—let alone squeeze it! How am I meant to know if all the pus has been removed?

This abscess could simply be lanced and drained, with no need for antibiotics at all. I have not taken any painkillers until now because I dislike medication due to the side effects and inflammation they cause in the body. Rather than lancing the abscess, they have given me medication, which not only costs me but also costs them!

Current Struggles

I'm currently on two forms of painkillers due to extreme pain and strong antibiotics. This is the second round of antibiotics; after switching to a different one on Sunday morning, the abscess has grown and become more painful, which is why I returned this morning.

To top it off, my prescription cost over £40, and parking was an additional £15. It’s been quite a journey, and I can’t help but reflect on how the slogan “We Treat the Symptoms, Not the Causes!” resonates with my experience.

I'm frustrated by the NHS system—it’s broken and has cost me money and time, absolutely! This is exactly why I founded my business as a Vitamin Therapist and have grown to a full wellness and health company, Boost and Glow.
