Safety Depends Almost Entirely on How You Take It

Glutathione is not inherently dangerous — it's a molecule your body produces naturally in every single cell. The question of whether supplemental glutathione is safe is not a simple yes or no. It depends on the form, the dose, the delivery method, your health status, and critically — who is administering it and in what setting.

There is a vast difference between the safety profile of oral glutathione at modest doses and high-dose IV glutathione administered in an unregulated beauty clinic by a non-medical practitioner. Conflating the two does a disservice to the people genuinely trying to make an informed decision. So let's look at each delivery method honestly, with the evidence on the table.

The safety question isn't "is glutathione safe?" — it's "which form, at what dose, administered by whom, for what purpose?" The answers are very different depending on your choices.

The most common side effects are mild gastrointestinal: bloating and nausea, which typically improve when taken with food.

The main concern with standard oral glutathione is not safety — it's effectiveness. Most of it is destroyed in the gut before absorption. You're paying for something that largely doesn't reach your bloodstream.

The clinical evidence for IV glutathione safety is concerning in specific contexts. A controlled clinical study found 8 out of 16 participants who received IV glutathione developed abnormal liver function tests. One participant had anaphylaxis. A 2024 narrative review concluded IV glutathione carries serious safety concerns including anaphylaxis and hepatotoxicity. A 2025 Cureus review found insufficient evidence to recommend IV use for cosmetic skin lightening specifically, due to risk-benefit concerns. Regulatory bodies including the Philippine FDA have issued formal warnings.

Why the 2025 Channel 4 Investigation Matters

In 2025, a Channel 4 News investigation found over 300 beauty salons across the UK offering intravenous glutathione drips — many without any medical supervision, and some administering treatments in settings with inadequate hygiene and safety standards. Glutathione vials were found being sold online without licence checks and administered in non-clinical settings.

What the Channel 4 investigation found

The Safety in Beauty campaign group reported that consumers have experienced serious side effects including anaphylaxis requiring hospitalisation, kidney strain, and infections — from IV glutathione administered in unregulated settings. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) responded by welcoming the investigation and highlighting the risks of unregulated intravenous procedures in beauty settings. A BMJ commentary from a UK physician specifically warned about the rise of glutathione skin bleaching via IV, citing risks including nervous system toxicity, liver and kidney toxicity, headaches, and rare but severe skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Oral glutathione at modest doses (up to 500–600mg daily) appears safe for short-to-medium term use, with mild GI side effects being the main concern. NAC has decades of clinical safety data at doses used in wellness supplementation (600–1,800mg). Liposomal glutathione at standard doses shows no significant safety signals in published trials. IV glutathione in properly supervised medical settings — using pharmaceutical-grade materials and appropriate dosing — has a very different risk profile to unregulated IV administration.

What the evidence doesn't yet tell us

Long-term safety of oral glutathione beyond 2 months has not been adequately studied.
