Watching your hair thin or fall out is distressing enough without also not knowing why. One of the most common — and most overlooked — causes is sitting in your blood: low iron.
The iron and hair connection
Hair follicles are some of the most metabolically active cells in your body, which means they're also some of the first to be affected when iron stores run low. Even if you're not clinically anaemic, low ferritin (your iron storage marker) alone has been linked to increased hair shedding — often before any other symptom shows up.
Signs it could be iron, not just "stress" or genetics
- Hair loss that's diffuse (thinning all over) rather than in a specific pattern
- Fatigue or low energy alongside the hair changes
- Pale skin, brittle nails, or feeling cold more than usual
- Heavy periods, a plant-based diet, or a history of low iron
Why a standard blood test might miss it
Many routine panels check haemoglobin but not ferritin specifically — which means you can have "normal" blood results on paper while your iron stores are still too low to support healthy hair growth. Ferritin needs to be tested directly to get the full picture.
What we test
Our Hair Loss Blood Test covers 45 biomarkers, including iron and ferritin alongside thyroid function, vitamin D, B12, zinc, and hormone markers — because hair loss is rarely caused by just one thing, and testing broadly gives a far more accurate picture than guessing.
If you'd rather start with iron specifically, our Vitamin & Nutrient Blood Test also covers iron and ferritin alongside other common deficiencies linked to fatigue and hair changes.
Stop guessing why your hair is thinning. Get tested, or book a free consultation if you're not sure which panel is right for you.
