The Hormone Behind the Revolution — and Why It's Changed Everything

GLP-1 — glucagon-like peptide-1 — is a hormone naturally produced in your gut in response to eating. It plays a central role in regulating blood sugar, appetite, and digestion. When you eat, GLP-1 is released, stimulating insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon (which raises blood sugar), slowing gastric emptying, and most importantly — signalling the brain that you're full.

In people with obesity or type 2 diabetes, the GLP-1 response is often blunted — meaning the signals that regulate appetite and blood sugar don't work as effectively as they should. GLP-1 receptor agonists — medications like semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) — mimic and amplify this hormone, restoring the satiety signals that help regulate food intake far more effectively than willpower alone ever could.

The results are remarkable. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 10–15% of body weight with semaglutide and 15–22% with tirzepatide. Real-world UK data from 113,630 people through one private provider showed average weight loss of 21.5% over 10 months. Beyond weight, GLP-1 medications reduce cardiovascular risk, improve blood sugar control, lower blood pressure, reduce fatty liver disease, and show promising effects on kidney disease and sleep apnoea.

The contraindications — who cannot take GLP-1 medications

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 should not take them. They are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. People with a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, or certain kidney conditions require careful clinical assessment. This is precisely why a blood panel — including thyroid markers, pancreatic function, and kidney/liver markers — before starting is not optional. It's essential.
